A More Real and Relevant Approach to Green Building
Friday, October 15 •8 am • Sponsored by Hardwood Market Report

The green movement is here to stay. And according to Peter Pfeiffer, FAIA, “A sensible and integrated approach to building design and construction is a focus this latter-day green building movement seeks and needs.” The complexity of how various design decisions and building components interact with each other to affect building durability and maintenance; conservation of natural resources; human health and comfort; energy efficiency and its relatedness to US energy independence will be addressed by Mr. Pfeiffer in an enlightening format that is timely, relevant and inspiring.

Speaker: Peter L. Pfeiffer, FAIApeter, Barley & Pfeiffer Architects

Peter Pfeiffer (BS Rensselaer ’78,  M Arch. University of Texas ’83)  is a LEED accredited professional Architect and Building Scientist practicing throughout the United States and Canada. He has spent the past 30+ years developing high performance buildings and homes. In 2004 he was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for this, and for his life-long commitment to "mainstreaming green building in North America.” Peter is one of only a half dozen U.S. architects to receive such recognition.

As the founding principal of Barley & Pfeiffer Architects, a firm recognized nationally for its pioneering use of environmentally responsive building design and construction techniques, he continues to push design and performance to its next, better, level. This includes healthy low-toxicity environments in medical facilities and private homes, energy-conserving design and construction, and water conservation for residential and commercial use. Barley & Pfeiffer Architects have completed over 600 projects nationally since its founding in 1987. Their work has been published both in the United States and abroad in such diverse venues as the Washington Post, The New York Times, Fine Homebuilding, and Better Homes & Gardens magazine. On multiple occasions Peter has been a guest on National Public Radio as well as the HG-TV network addressing “green” building.

Fine Homebuilding magazine recognized the firm for having designed one of the top nine most noteworthy homes in America in 1993, as well as “the Greenest home in America” in 2003. EEBA, the national Energy Efficient Building Association, awarded Mr. Pfeiffer the Conference Chair’s Award in 1994 for his career accomplishments pioneering environmentally sensitive architecture. The firm also designed and engineered one of the country’s first LEED Platinum-rated homes in 2008 – the highest category offered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The National Association of Home Builders honored Peter as the “National Green Advocate of the Year” in 2003 for his life-long achievements in home building. He has been an active charter member of both the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes program.

In 2004 Residential Architect  cited him as one of the 10 most influential residential architects of the decade.
